Deadly Pandemic Bird Flu Details Finally Are Made Public

Simple contagion: One of the country's leading science journals publishes the full details about how researchers made the deadly bird flu (H5N1) transmissible between ferrets, which are a model for studying human flu epidemics.

Ten ferrets, some bird flu and swabs. That is all, according to a presentation last summer, one needs to concoct a virulent strain of influenza that could start a deadly pandemic among humans.
These initial findings were presented last September in Malta at the European Scientific Working group on Influenza meeting to an auditorium packed with fellow scientists and policy makers. Ron Fouchier, a virologist at Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, himself a bit sniffly at the time, calmly explained that he and his team had discovered that without the help of another virus, the deadly avian flu (H5N1) could easily mutate in mammals to become transmissible through the air, like a true pandemic strain, through a sneeze or a cough. And it might need as few as five mutations to make that leap.
The findings took time to gain attention wider public attention, but when research manuscripts describing the specific mutations that the virus underwent were submitted to scientific journals, many scientists and commentators protested, suggesting such information could be used by bioterrorists to manufacture a pandemic flu strain. But after extensive review by researchers, journal editors and even the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity, a decision was finally made to take the papers public.
Today in Science, the full paper on the ferret experiment is being published and made freely available online in its entirety. This publication follows the May release of a similar H5N1 study in Nature.?(Scientific American?is part of Nature Publishing Group.)?A second Science study, also published online June 21, assesses the likelihood that these mutations will occur in nature and spur a pandemic in humans. Today's paper is published alongside eight essays explaining some of the risks and benefits of this sort of research.
The upshot is further evidence that this deadly bird flu spreading to humans "is absolutely in the realm of possibility," Derek Smith, of the University of Cambridge, who co-authored the separate, second Science paper said at a Wednesday press briefing. "We see no fundamental hurdle to that happening."
H5N1 has already been found in some 20 mammalian species, including dogs, cats, humans and the dreaded virus reservoir, pigs, Fouchier noted at the briefing. About 600 human deaths have been confirmed in the past 15 years as being caused by this infection, acquired directly from birds. (The mortality rate among humans has been reported at a scary 60 percent, but this is likely an overestimate because non-lethal cases are probably not reported as often, Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health, noted in an essay in the same issue of Science)
"Whether this virus may acquire the ability to be transmitted via aerosols or respiratory droplets among mammals, including humans, to trigger a future pandemic is a key question for pandemic preparedness," Fouchier and his colleagues wrote in their paper.

DISABLED DEATH-PAROLE
NY man denied parole in disabled boy's death
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A former state worker has been denied parole in the 2007 killing of an autistic boy under his care in upstate New York, a case that inspired some increased oversight of homes for the developmentally disabled and ongoing legislative debate over further measures to curb abuse.
The parole board says 40-year-old Edwin Tirado's release now would be incompatible with public safety and welfare.
Tirado is serving five to 15 years in prison. He was convicted of second-degree manslaughter for killing 13-year-old Jonathan Carey, a resident at O.D. Heck Developmental Center, where Tirado worked.
The board says Friday that Tirado caused the boy to stop breathing by inappropriately restraining him in a van, then failed to get medical help.
The van driver, Nadeem Mall, pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide.

Man admits killing 73-year-old upstate NY woman
HUDSON, N.Y. (AP) - A man has admitted killing a 73-year-old Sunday school teacher in her eastern New York home last year.
The Hudson Register-Star reports that 22-year-old Shafiqul Islam (shu-FEE'-qwuhl IHZ'-lahm) pleaded guilty Thursday to second-degree murder and criminal possession of stolen property.
Lois Decker was found dead in her home in the Columbia County town of Hillsdale on Nov. 20. She had been strangled.
Islam was arrested after he crashed Decker's car and fled to nearby Hudson, where he was caught carrying her credit card.
He faces up to life in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for June 26.
Hillsdale is 35 miles southeast of Albany.

Body of missing western NY kayaker found
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. (AP) - Searchers have found the body of a missing kayaker who disappeared after capsizing on the Allegheny Reservoir near the New York-Pennsylvania border last weekend.
WIVB-TV in Buffalo reports that Jonathan Miller's body was discovered just after 9 a.m. Friday near the Webbs Ferry area of the reservoir.
Cattaraugus County Sheriff's officials say the 23-year-old Jamestown man had been kayaking with a friend May 20 when their boats overturned. The friend swam to the New York shore.
The reservoir is about 70 miles south of Buffalo.

NY inspector general staff has 10 with tax access
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The Cuomo administration has designated 10 staff from the New York inspector general's office as deputy tax commissioners with authority to inspect otherwise confidential tax information while pursuing investigations of state workers.
The memorandum between the inspector general and tax department revises an unpublicized January memo, which gave that authority to the inspector general's entire staff of about 60. Legislators raised privacy concerns.
Acting Inspector General Catherine Leahy Scott says Friday the revisions clarify the intent and were made in consultation with the Legislature.
The memorandum says those 10 people, including Leahy Scott, can see tax return information when it is "relevant and material" to an ongoing investigation, including probes of Department of Taxation and Finance staff.
They are bound by the same privacy restrictions as tax staff.
WORKER ELECTROCUTED
Upstate NY worker dies when gear hits power line
EAST GREENBUSH, N.Y. (AP) - A worker lowering a light tower has been electrocuted after it touched a power line and caught fire at a construction site in eastern New York.
Police tell local media that 47-year-old Daniel Tobin of Petersburgh was probably killed instantly by the charge that surged through the light used to illuminate night work.
He was working for DelSignore Blacktop and Paving of Troy at a roundabout construction project on Route 4 in the Rensselaer County town of East Greenbush, an Albany suburb. The accident happened just before 9:30 a.m. Friday.
Federal workplace safety officials are investigating.

Chris Ford: Why just focus on Joseph Kony? What of other war criminals?
?I have just viewed the Kony 2012 film put out by the US group Invisible Children.?
There is no doubt that Joseph Kony, head of the Lords Resistance Army (LRA) is one of the worst war criminals. He has been indicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on war crimes charges. Kony's capture and enslavement of 80,000 children who either become child soldiers or in the case of young girls sexual slaves are truly repulsive acts. Furthermore, his historic alleged massacres of unarmed civilians have been horrendous in their scope.
But I agree with the small but growing number of critics as well who question Kony 2012's lack of analysis and insight. One of the things that struck me about the film was the lack of detail about Uganda's recent history. Kony's actions should be viewed within the context of that history. The younger generation the film is aimed at mobilising probably know very little about the bloodthirsty dictatorship of Idi Amin back in the 1970s. The late dictator, who was known to personally preside over the executions of his opponents and even for cannabilising them, brutalised and destabilised the country.
Following Amin's overthrow in a Tanzanian-led invasion in 1979, the country descended into political chaos and civil war. Kony's LRA played a significant role in this new civil war which was known as the Ugandan Bush War (1981-86). Initially, the rebel commander enjoyed great popularity amongst his own Acholi people following the overthrow of his fellow tribesman Tito Okello from the presidency by Yoweri Museveni of the National Resistance Army (NRA) in 1986. Over the last twenty years, Kony's militia has been variously known as the United Holy Salvation Army and the United Democratic Christian Army before adopting its current name in recent years. Besides Uganda, the LRA has also taken an active role in other regional conflicts such as those in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The ICC has issued indictments against the LRA for its activities in all three countries.
Admittedly, this is a succinct summary of the facts but we should remember that there is a wider context to this story. Also, besides Kony, we have other war criminals, both indicted and unindicted, who need to be brought to account.
What about George W. Bush and Tony Blair? Did not their illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq (not to mention the decade long sanctions against the country) lead to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi men, women and children? I see that the Kony 2012 camp are counting good old Dubya as a hopeful ally in their fight as one of the influential decisionmakers they want to target to speak out against Kony. What about the Indonesian generals who murdered 200,000 East Timorese during the 1975-2001 period? What about the Palestinians who have endured an illegal occupation that has seen the deaths of thousands of unarmed men, women and children at the hands of Israeli forces? What about the Communist Chinese leadership who ordered the murder of thousands of demonstrators (mainly teenagers and young adults) in Tianamen Square in 1989? I could go on.
Are the Invisible Children documentary makers going to make films about the plight and fight for justice of the children of the wars and massacres that all the abovementioned have perpetrated? Are they going to call for the indictments of the likes of Bush, Blair, Netanyahu (and successive living Israeli leaders), some of the living Chinese Communist leaders who ordered Tianamen, and the Indonesian generals, for example?
I don't think so. ?
And the hypocrisy doesn't stop there as the culturemakers that Invisible Children want to target in their Kony 2012 campaign include Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie. I was reading just this past week about Jolie and her partner Brad Pitt's Damascus dinner date with another blood thirsty military/political leader, namely President Bashir Al-Assad of Syria. I have a lot of time for Stephen Colbert but not for Rush Limbaugh. Aside from Limbaugh's obvious talents as a tireless campaigner for women's rights (yeah, right), this paragon of virtue has actually defended the LRA in the past. Limbaugh backed the LRA publicly due to their opposition to the Muslim-dominated (North) Sudanese Government. And as for trying to get Justin Bieber on board? How politically interested is he? Ditto the others (aside from Lady Gaga and Bono who do have political consciences).
Nevertheless, I support other criticisms of the Kony 2012 filmmakers that have been made in the past week. Numerous respected publications such as the Washington Post and other bloggers have carried commentary questioning the motives of the movement. For example, why have they backed the US's low key military intervention in this conflict that has failed (so far) to capture Kony and has in fact only increased his brutality? They have also brushed aside the fact that the Ugandan Army (no great respecters of human rights themselves) have largely defeated the LRA whom are now reportedly down to 300 hard core followers. The fact that they are selling (that's right selling) Kony related merchandise is causing concern given that the organisation spends very little on on-the-ground operations. Besides, the US intervention in Uganda has come at a time when China is seeking to exert its influence in what is still a very resource rich continent. After all, the LRA has fought (as referred to earlier) in the Democratic Republic of Congo whose own civil war has been spurred on, in large part, by the chase for diamonds and other precious resources.
Yes, Kony and all other war criminals currently on the ICC's most wanted list should all be brought to justice. But we should also remember that the West has its own war criminals whom are sheltered from prosecution too. When all war criminals, whether they be from richer or poorer, democratic or non-democratic nations, are equally held to account and when film makers give equal time to the traumatised civilians of ALL conflicts, then the Joseph Kony's of this world will truly get the message. Until then, rank hypocrisy from organisations like Invisible Children just won't do!
(NB: If you want to capture Kony and others of his ilk, I believe that a UN mandated and controlled multinational security force should be set up. It should have the power to not only engage in peacekeeping and conflict prevention duties but also work with civilian authorities in trying to capture indicted war criminals. Nations, such as the US, Russia, China and others, should not protect client rulers or military lords for that matter accused of human rights violations or war crimes. That's why any such force should be comprised of non-superpower nations whom have been found to have very good human rights records and are prepared to show no fear or favour towards their targets. Kony is thumbing his nose at the US but would he thumb his nose so much if it were Swedish or South African forces which were involved? Something to ponder on in this debate.)

HBO, Bigpoint To Develop 'Game of Thrones' Online Game - The ...
COLOGNE, Germany - HBO has signed a deal with German gaming group Bigpoint to develop a massive multiplayer online role playing game based on HBO's Emmy-winning fantasy series Game of Thrones.

The game will be set in the series' fictional medieval world of Westeros and feature plotlines inspired by the show and George R.R. Martin's original A Song of Ice and Fire book series. The second season of Game of Thrones bows on HBO April 1.

Funeral home denies role in Houston casket photo (omg!)

Simple though they are, with the use of a dual-joystick system, there?s a lot of times when Don Macaroni would not move in the way I wished he would, and would not shoot his gun at the enemies I was aiming for. The problem is that it seems Mafia Rush wants to predict where you want to shoot, but more often that not, it is wildly incorrect. The game is still playable, and out of the four modes (survival, attack, defend and robbery), there was not a single moment I didn?t thoroughly enjoy, but Mafia Rush will probably not feel comfortable with most players who simply want to play a game that knows what it?s doing.

Another game that?s a hit on the App Store this week, Pizza Vs. Skeletons, like Mafia Rush, has a pretty fresh style and very original gameplay. It?s called Pizza Vs. Skeletons, after all. By leaning your iOS device from side to side, you control a rolling pizza with an angry expression, as it tries to kill not just skeletons, but all manner of ghoulish beings. Coupled with the fun variations of levels, including a great Angry Birds-style level, ski-sloping levels and tons of other great and original challenges, and the fact that you can customise your pizza to have any topping, clothing and face you want, Pizza Vs. Skeletons is pretty much all about the random fun.
Pizza Vs. Skeletons has a beautiful art style that looks like it?s been sketched for something more than a hilariously random series of levels. It?s well-designed, interesting to look at, and frankly, it?s almost a shame that a style so wonderful is overtaken by the game?s humour. However, it?s still clear to see the effort that has gone into this game, and so I would have to say that, despite the pricetag, Pizza Vs. Skeletons is one of the most fun games I?ve played this week.

Robber Rabbits! has just about escaped my wrath for being another Angry Birds clone. Just about, but not entirely. Despite opening with a similar sequence of still cartoons that try to narrate the circumstances leading up to players getting on with the game, and despite the catapult style of play which requires players to shoot obstacles to get to the treasure held within a bank vault, Robber Rabbits! just falls short of being a complete ripoff of the Rovio hit game.
Despite its glaring similarities, there are some aspects of Robbing Rabbits! that hold merit ? it is a fun game to play, it provides a challenge that is somewhat different to what Angry Birds provides, in that it?s less of a catapult- and more of a gunfire-styled game. But it?s just frustrating to have played one game, then play another that holds so many similar ideas, tweaked just about enough to stop it being pulled from the App Store. If you?ve already got Angry Birds on your iPhone, just start playing it again, instead of wasting more money on another striving title like Robber Rabbits!.

Her voice broke, and she had to stop and compose herself as she described how the grace and mercy of God have sustained her through every trial since she accepted Christ as a teenager.
